Freedom of speech is one of the cornerstones of what makes this country unique. It ensures that every individual has the right to speak their mind, share ideas, and engage in open dialogue, even when opinions differ. At the heart of this freedom is civility: the ability to disagree without demeaning, to debate without silencing, and to listen as much as we speak.
We should never feel fear for voicing our beliefs, whether they are popular or unpopular. True freedom means protecting not just the voices we agree with, but also those we don’t. That protection creates a society where ideas can be tested, challenged, and refined.
But with that right comes responsibility. Resorting to intimidation or violence against those we disagree with is not only unacceptable, it undermines the very principle of free expression. A nation built on liberty cannot thrive if disagreement is met with hostility instead of respect.
If we want to preserve what makes America strong, we must recommit to protecting speech, practicing civility, and rejecting violence. Only then can freedom of expression continue to serve as both a shield for the individual and a foundation for the nation.
Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk. A great man who leaves behind a lasting legacy.
