Despite a clear majority of Americans – 57%, including President Trump – supporting the legalization of recreational marijuana, ballot measures to legalize it failed in Florida, North Dakota, and South Dakota this Election Day. With so much public support behind legalization, this setback should alarm us all. Meanwhile, states are struggling to fund critical infrastructure, reduce crime, and improve education for our children. Yet, taxpayer dollars continue to be spent on incarcerating nonviolent marijuana offenders. This misuse of resources is a distraction from the real challenges we face.

Nearly half of U.S. states have already legalized marijuana, and the tide is turning. Nationwide legalization is on the horizon – it’s not a question of if, but when. Now is the time for Republicans and conservatives to step up and ensure their voices are part of the conversation, shaping the terms of legalization in a way that strengthens our communities and our economy.
