As part of his continued efforts to make the federal government more efficient, President Trump is preparing to make major reforms to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
When it was founded in 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson, its goal was to bring social justice to low-income American cities. In the nearly 60 years since, the racial homeownership gap is higher today than when the program started.
Even prominent Democrats like Andrew Cuomo and Al Gore have previously slammed the department, calling it “the poster child for failed government” and “a failed policy”.
In the coming weeks, President Trump plans to sell the HUD headquarters, terminate nearly half of HUD’s staff, and cut useless programs that are siphoning millions of taxpayer dollars.
