Just last year, defense officials detected more than 350 unauthorized drones around U.S. military bases - likely belonging to enemies who want to sabotage our military and attack the United States.
In one instance, dozens of foreign drones were caught over Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. And because of complicated rules of engagement protocols, our military officials didn’t have the authority to shoot down the drones.
This kind of confusion and indecision poses a huge risk to our country’s safety and security.
That’s why Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) crossed the aisle and introduced the bipartisan COUNTER Act.
If passed, this bill would give more U.S. military bases the authority to shoot down unidentified drones and give our military leaders the power to make quicker decisions without having to wait for layers of approval.
As enemies like China, Russia, and Iran get their hands on more sophisticated drone technology, we can’t afford to take any chances when it comes to protecting the homeland.
