Demand that Connecticut Lawmakers Choose Better Waste Management Over Ineffective Bans

Connecticut is currently considering HB 5524, a bill that would ban polystyrene foam foodservice containers. While reducing litter is a goal we all share, banning a specific material fails to address the root causes of waste and creates significant unintended consequences for our state.

Polystyrene foam is often the most efficient choice for the environment. It can require 50% less energy to manufacture and produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than many common alternatives, such as coated paper-based cups. Substituting materials without improving infrastructure does not necessarily reduce environmental impact.

This ban would also create an immediate financial burden for local organizations. Restaurants, hospitals, schools, and food banks rely on these containers for their superior insulation and durability. They remain one of the most affordable and effective options for small businesses and community groups already facing rising costs.

Instead of restrictive mandates, Connecticut should lead with practical, science-based waste management. By expanding recycling access, improving waste collection, and supporting advanced recycling technologies, we can modernize our system without forcing costly material substitutions on our community.

The Connecticut State Legislature must vote NO on HB 5524. Support real recycling solutions and protect our local economy by choosing infrastructure over ineffective bans.
