Prescription drug prices are out of control. On average, Americans pay nearly three times higher for prescription drugs than most other countries.
Part of the problem is that big drug companies have decade-long patents on brand-name prescription drugs, giving them the power to raise prices as high as they want without fear of competition.
That’s why President Trump recently signed an executive order directing the Department of Health and Human Services to work with Congress to fix the distortion in the Medicare negotiation process for small-molecule drugs.
Additionally, it reinstitutes a program from Trump’s first term to provide discounted insulin and empowers state governments to be more directly involved in the drug price negotiation process for their citizens.
